Otay Mesa is part of the city of San Diego, and the residential areas are covered by the city of San Diego Otay Mesa-Nestor community plan. It sits directly against the Chula Vista city limit, close enough that the mailing address does not always make the boundary obvious, and it is a short run out from central Chula Vista.

The housing here is generally newer than in the older South Bay communities to the west, which changes what a kitchen project involves. That frees budget for the parts of the project that show, and it makes a straightforward cabinet, counter and appliance replacement straightforward rather than a project with a hidden electrical scope attached.

Kitchens in newer housing here also tend to be open to the living space already, which removes the wall question and shifts the design work onto the island. Whether an island earns its place, whether it can take a sink or a cooktop without a disproportionate services bill, and whether the aisles around it leave room for two people are the questions that matter in this stock.
