Imperial Beach is an incorporated city with its own permitting, roughly fifteen minutes from central Chula Vista, and it presents the one condition that separates coastal kitchen work from inland kitchen work: salt air. Proximity to the ocean accelerates corrosion on anything metal, and in a kitchen that means hinges, drawer glides, fasteners, appliance housings and the underside of a stainless sink. It is not a reason to specify differently on everything, but it is a reason to take hardware quality seriously rather than treating it as a place to save.

The housing stock is small-scale and older across much of the city: beach cottages and single-storey bungalows on compact lots, with newer infill and multi-family construction scattered through it. Kitchens in that stock are small, and the design problem is almost always storage rather than style. Full-height cabinetry, drawer banks instead of base cabinets with doors, and a sink run planned around the smallest workable bowl are the moves that make a genuine difference in a room that cannot get bigger.

The other coastal consideration is ventilation, and it works in both directions. A kitchen near the beach benefits from a hood that ducts outside rather than recirculating, because the alternative to real extraction in a small house is cooking odour that stays. The complication is that a small older house may have no existing duct route at all, so the path to the exterior becomes part of the design rather than an afterthought at rough-in.

Where a property is close enough to the shoreline to fall within coastal permitting jurisdiction, that is a question for the city rather than an assumption to make, and it is worth raising early. Interior kitchen work generally does not engage it, but exterior alterations such as a new duct penetration or a window change sometimes do.
